The Welsh Way!
Who and what is UMCA?

UMCA explained...
Welcome to Aberystwyth! As you might have noticed there are two languages in Wales, and the Welsh language is a very prominent part of students life in Aberystwyth. That's why we have UMCA (Aberystwyth's Welsh Students Union) to provide the Welsh services for our Students and to ensure the right to study through the medium of Welsh. We offer free Welsh Lessons for learners, we have our own Welsh medium entertainment, and various vibrant societies as well. My office is in Pantycelyn Hall but this doesn't mean that there isn't welcome for students from other halls. If you speak Welsh or learning the language you must join UMCA!!!!

Welsh is one of the world's most significant Celtic languages., that derives as far back as the sixth century. During the centuries the language has survived many challenges. At the start of the twentieth century many predicted threat the Welsh language would be lost, but it's nice to say that the Welsh language still thrives despite the difficulties. In1982 Wales had it's first Welsh channel through the medium of Welsh called the S4C. This was a great boost for the Welsh language. In 1993 a Welsh Language Act was introduced so now the public sector in Wales is legally bound to provide services in both Welsh and English and many private companies do so because it's good for business.
The higher percentage of Welsh speaker are children e..g 54% of children aged between 5-15 of age. because of Welsh Medium Education in schools across Wales. It's the language of the future!
Þ Siaredir y Gymraeg gan dros 580,000 yng Nghymru a gymaint a hynny y tu allan i Gymru mae'n debyg!
Þ Welsh is spoken by over 580,000 in Wales and probably at least that many outside!
The University and the Union has a bilingualism policy because they believe that the language deserves this status and that we should normalise the language with the sam staus as English within the university.
